Wayanad derives its name from 'Vayal nadu', literally meaning paddy field. Serene and scenic, wild life and blossoms are abound here. Located 76km from Calicut, Wayanad nestles in the arms of the Western Ghats. Teeming with plantations, forests and wildlife, Wayanad beckons nature lovers all over. Very picturesque with a thick tropical rainforest cover, Wayanad is situated at a height of 700 to 2000m above sea level and is home to many species of animal and plant life.
Though getting here is a bit difficult, it is extremely worth the trouble. The nearest airport and rail head are in Calicut. But roads connect you to Kalpetta, Mananthavady, Thalasseri, Sulthan Bathery, Vythiri from Kozhikode, Kannur, Ooty (175km from Kalpetta) and Mysore (140km from Kalpetta).
One of the art forms you can witness here is the Kummattikkali -- a mask dance with dancers in painted wooden masks and sporting sprigs of leaves and grass. They go dancing from house to house to please the Devi, or mother goddess.
Adventure lovers must trek to Chembra peak for an exhilarating view of Wayanad. Another must do is the 'Pakshipathalam', where deep rock caves at the northern top end of the Brahmagiri serve as the abode of various birds and wild beasts. Water falls to a depth of more than 500m at the Meenmutty Water Fall. There are many such scenic picnic spots. Don't forget to visit the Edakkal caves as well as the wildlife sanctuaries.
