40km from the state capital, Thiruvananthapuram, and 57km from the International Airport, Varkala is a seaside resort and spa, besides being a pilgrimage center for Hindus. The town has a railway station as well.
The beaches in Varkala are pristine, and a great spot for rejuvenation, yoga, swimming, and sunbathing. Sivagari Mutt, the hilltop mausoleum of the great social reformer, Sree Narayana Guru is at Varkala. Kaduvayil Thangal Dargah is another significant place of worship in the town. Tall cliffs with mineral springs are other attractions of this coastal town. Varkala is home to a 2000-year-old Sree Janardhana Swamy Temple. The Nature Care Center is another must-see. Papanasam beach has a legend attached to it, besides being an Ayurvedic treatment center.
Taj Garden Retreat, Raja Park, Preeth, Ralapark Beach Resort are some accommodation options of varying price ranges. Finding alcohol may be a little difficult here since it has several religious sites, though not impossible. Clafutti, a great French patisserie should not be missed. Also try out Sunset restaurant.
