Kollam

Kollam, an old sea port town on the Arabian coast, is 71km away from Thiruvananthapuram.

Once the oldest ports on the Malabar Coast, it was the center of the international spice trade and is still currently the center of the country's cashew trading and processing industry. At the banks of the Ashtamudi Lake, it is from here that you can embark on an unforgettable backwater trip. It takes around 8 hours for a leisurely and picturesque backwater experience from here to Alapuzha. Besides reliable air, rail and road services, there is also the Ferry service adjacent to the central bus station. Kollam has some interesting historic remnants and a number of temples built in the traditional ornate architectural style.

One of the places you must visit is Alumkadavu, half way en route to Alappuzha from Kollam, a serene undisturbed backwater village famous for its ancient boat building yard. The Thirumullavaram Beach is a lovely, secluded picnic spot that is well connected by bus routes. The Thangasseri Beach has a seaside village of prominent historic importance due to the ruins of an old Portuguese fort and churches built in the 18th century and the lighthouse.
