Situated to the east of Chalakudy, and quite close to the Sholayar forests, are the beautiful waterfalls of Athirapally and Vazhachal (Prounced as vaazhachaal). It%u2019s a wild beauty that cannot be quite captured in words and makes you get out and want to enjoy life.
90km from Cochin, regular trains and bus services ply to Chalakudy. The roads are excellent if you need to come by private vehicles.
These waterfalls plunge into the Chalakudy River. A very interesting sight is the lesser known Charpa falls. 20km from Chalakudy is the Anakkayam or 'Elephant pit' - a virgin forest with natural rock formations and cool placid lake. With two water theme parks nearby, there is plenty to keep the whole family engaged in water sports. The adventurous can take off on a safari through the deep forest and high ranges of the Western Ghats and warm off at the Malakapara Tea Gardens. The route is scenic and daring with occasional sightings of wildlife. For the less brave, Thumpurmuzhi Gardens is the quieter option.
